Witches, witches

Durante agosto decidí combinar algo libremente los retos de Witchgust (#witchgust en redes) y Witchy Art Challenge (#witchyartchallenge) y hacer algunos dibujos rápidos con los temas propuestos, porque adoro dibujar brujas (¡qué inesperado!) y porque encuentro inspiración en ambos.

During August I decided that I was going to mix a bit freely two challenges featuring witches: Witchgust (#witchgust) and Witchy Art Challenge (#witchyartchallenge); and make some quick drawings, because I love to draw witches - how unexpected! - and because I find inspiration in both of them. 

Así que aquí tenéis una Bruja de las Plantas, una Bruja Azul y un apunte rápido que hice para Lughnasadh, todos con tinta, rotuladores y/o lápices de colores.

So here's a Plant Witch, a Blue Witch and a quick sketch I did for Lughnasadh, all of them made with ink, markers and/or pencils.

Inktober 2016 (I) - Uranus

Bien, este año voy a intentar hacer algunos dibujos por Inktober. Y tengo ganas de jugar un poco.

Así que aquí está el primero: ¿Una Guerrero Urano-bruja, quizás…? Sí, definitivamente.

Samhain

Mis queridas Bestias, os presento a Adamine y Gavina.

El origen de esto viene provocado una vez más por el arco infalible de Lúa Prometea, que me guió sabiamente hasta el exquisito arte de Fyodor Pavlov: además de quedar completamente cautivada por su delicioso trazo de inspiración modernista (adoro el art nouveau) y su temática abiertamente queer (adoración y admiración), me topé con dos bellísimas postales de brujas que había diseñado para Halloween; y de pronto caí en la cuenta de que NUNCA había dibujado brujas en el sentido clásico del término, con su sombrero y su escoba, y me pareció que eso era del todo imperdonable y me volví loca de exaltación y decidí que para este Yule/Navidad TENÍA que tener una.
Pero nacieron dos, juntas, listas para Samhain. Y aquí están, habitando el aire a medio camino entre el otoño y en invierno.

Que vuestro Samhain sea perfumado y embriagador como las hojas caídas tras la tormenta.



My dear beasts, I would like to introduce you to Adamine and Gavina.

The origin of this is caused once again by Lúa Prometea, who wisely guided me to the exquisite art of Fyodor Pavlov: besides feeling absolutely captivated by his delicious art nouveau stroke (I love art nouveau) and his openly queer theme (adoration and admiration), I run into two gorgeous witches postcards that he had designed for Halloween; and suddenly I realized that I had NEVER drawn witches in the classic sense, with hat and broom and all, and I thought that that was definitely unforgivable and I went mad with excitement and decided that for this Yule/Christmas I HAD to have one.
But they were finally two, and they were born together, ready to celebrate Samhain. And here they are, inhabiting the air which is halfway between autumn and winter.

May your Samhain be perfumed and intoxicating like the fallen leaves after a storm.

Soy feliz al anunciaros que por fin queda inaugurada mi página web, mardelvalle.com.

Una nueva guarida, pulcra, blanca, gestionada por mí. Los que estáis acostumbrados al refugio oscuro y cálido de mi blog, no os asustéis: todo es parte de lo mismo, esto sólo son las cúpulas, sabéis, y hay unas vistas preciosas.

Aún me falta pulir algunos detalles: la sección "Tiendas", por ejemplo, por el momento sólo puede ser mostrada en español. Pero necesito ayuda informática externa para solucionarlo, lo cual puede llevar a un periodo de espera un poco absurdo; ya que, al fin y al cabo, tanto Etsy como Society6 resultan perfectamente accesibles desde los enlaces de redes.
Así que lancémonos: atravesad las puertas, dormid entre las flores, buscaos en los espejos (y luego me decís qué habéis hallado). Coged un pastelillo, tomemos un té. Bailemos como si nos fuera la vida en ello, como siempre.

My gorgeous beings:

I'm so happy to announce the launch of my website, mardelvalle.com.

This new den is neat, white, tidy, run by myself.  Those who are used to the dark and warm refuge that is my blog, please, don't be afraid: everything is part of the same thing, this is just the dome, you know, and it has such a marvelous view.

There are still some details left to fix: the "Shops" section, for example, is only available in Spanish for the moment. But I will need some extra (programmer) assistance with that, and it can take a while, and keeping the whole website hidden would be a bit absurd taking into account that both my Etsy and Society6 stores are perfectly accessible from the social network icons placed below.

So go through the gates, sleep among the flowers, search for yourself into the mirrors (and then tell me what you have found). Have a cake, enjoy a cup of tea. Let's dance like there is no tomorrow, as always.

Dulce Yule. Haced lo que sois, lo que os haga felices, lo que más os haga sangrar y aullar vuestro rojo corazón.

Y cuidaos de las criaturas de los lirios, al menos que queráis danzar por el abismo (lo cual, debo señalar, me parece lo mejor que se puede hacer en este mundo).

Sweet Yule. Do whatever you are, whatever makes you happy, whatever makes your red heart bleed and howl.

And beware of the creatures among the irises, unless you are willing to dance along the abyss (which, I must point out, seems to me the best thing you could do in this world).

Ésta la comencé en abril; y ese mismo mes hubo de quedar interrumpida, coloreada a medias, hasta hace unos días.
Ahora está terminada, y, como suele pasar, las palabras para escoltarla llegaron a mí en el momento oportuno.

PD: En cuanto a otros asuntos, debo señalar que Society6 vuelve a tener uno de sus periodos sin gastos de envío hasta este domingo. Por si algún ser inquieto los quiere aprovechar…

Now she is completed and, as usual, the words to escort her came to me at the most timely moment.

PD: Regarding other matters, I must mention that Society6 has one of its free shipping period thru this Sunday. So just in case some restless being wants to make the most of it…

A game of you

No sé si está acabada, me temo: eso dependerá de cómo se construyan las demás, caprichosas criaturas ellas.

Quien vea a la muchacha de cabello negro y piense en un levísimo personaje que aparece como un efímero resplandor al final de cierto arco argumental de The Sandman no andará muy desencaminado, lo confieso. Las grietas son las grietas. O puede que no os recuerde a nadie en absoluto, lo cual es también igual de válido.

Que ellas nos salven, las que construyeron reinos y fueron luego olvidadas del mundo. Al fin y al cabo, en esa suerte de arcoiris cristalizado fueron felices para siempre durante mucho, mucho tiempo, ¿no es así...?


(PD: En un orden de cosas completamente distinto, este viernes 28 Duendelirium ofrecerá otro concierto acústico. A quien pueda interesar…)

I don't know if it's finished, I'm afraid: it will depend on how the other illustrations construct themselves, they whimsical creatures.

Those of you who see this dark-haired young girl and think of a slight character who appears like an ephemeral glimpse at the end of certain nuanced plot of The Sandman series won't be too misguided, I must confess. The cracks are the cracks. Or it may be that she reminds you of nothing at all, which is equally valid too.

May they save us, those who built realms and were forgotten by the world afterwards. After all, inside that sort of crystallized rainbow they lived happily even after for a long, long time, didn't they…?

Pequeña criatura humana (o algo así) para una portada escolar.

Una dama me ha dicho que ella quería un globo como éste. 

Yo le he dicho que, para ser desvergonzadamente sincera, yo también; sobre todo porque estoy casi segura de que al atardecer canta con una voz bajita y tintineante como una joya diminuta.

Y… ¿quién no querría algo así ciertos atardeceres…?

A lady has told me that she wanted a balloon like that.

I have told her that, if I must be shamelessly sincere, me too; and mostly because I'm almost sure that it sings at dusk with a tinkling tiny voice like a jewel.

Rumbo a Thuban (III)

Más  ilustraciones de Rumbo a Thuban, de Susana Fernández Gabaldón, publicado por la editorial Edimáter.

La novela es en blanco y negro, pero aún sabiendo que sería así no pude evitar crear los dibujos directamente a color. El colorido era un rasgo esencial del Antiguo Egipto, y siendo así usaban unas tonalidades tan vivas, tan preciosas… No hacerlo yo así se me antojaba un crimen.

Some more illustrations for Rumbo a Thuban, written by Susana Fernández Gabaldón and published by Edimáter. 

The novel is in black and white, but even knowing this I couldn't help creating the drawings in full color. The colorful atmosphere was essential in Ancient Egypt, and so they used vibrant tonalities, so beautiful… Not doing it so myself seemed a crime to me.

Rumbo a Thuban (II)

Aquí tenéis algunos de los dibujos interiores de Rumbo a Thuban, de Susana Fernández Gabaldón (podéis ver la portada aquí).

Si he de ser sincera, el Antiguo Egipto nunca ha sido uno de los periodos históricos y culturales que más íntimamente me han tocado (inevitablemente, mi alma tira de mí hacia el norte), pero bucear entre mis viejos volúmenes buscando inspiración real ha resultado ser muy, muy interesante, y me ha brindado la ocasión de admirar profundamente la labor preciosista de sus antiguos artesanos.

Dado el clima de hermetismo y misterio que predomina durante toda la novela, decidí no ilustrar escenas de la misma sino escenas pertenecientes al Antiguo Egipto sacadas de murales o relieves. Entre éstos, escogí con preferencia aquellos temas que suelen ser más desconocidos para el público medio: imágenes de la fauna, la flora y la vida cotidiana de los egipcios, motivos que retrataban escrupulosamente con una exquisitez asombrosa y un tremendo realismo.

To be sincere, Ancient Egypt has never been one of the historical or cultural periods that have touched my heart deeper (the north pulls my soul without remedy), but diving into my old books looking for real inspiration has turned out to be very, very interesting, and has given me the opportunity to thoroughly admire the refined labor of their artisans. 

In view of the secretive and mysterious atmosphere which predominates in the book, I decided not to illustrate scenes of the story but scenes belonging to old Egyptian wall paintings and reliefs. Among these ones, I preferably choose those topics more unfamiliar to the general public: images of the flora, fauna and daily life, motifs that Egyptians craftsmen depicted with amazing realism and exquisiteness. 

Rumbo a Thuban

Portada para la próxima novela juvenil de la editorial Edimáter Rumbo a Thuban, de Susana Fernández Gabaldón, tercera parte de su libro Más allá de las tres dunas.

Si hace más de catorce años, cuando leí absolutamente fascinada la primera versión mecanografiada de Más allá de las tres dunas (un precioso y apasionante mamotreto por lo menos cuatro veces más voluminoso que la obra final), me hubieran dicho que acabaría ilustrando una secuela de la misma, no sé muy bien cómo me habría sentido. Incrédula, seguramente. Divertida por la ocurrencia.

Y aquí estamos. Pero aquí y ahora debo dejar constancia de que aún espero la publicación de La Ciudad de los Hombres-Ciudad, obra melancólica y poética que por la misma época me dejó un perfume de lluvia gris y amable en el corazón. Dolía dulcemente. Guardarte eso para ti sola me sigue pareciendo muy pero que muy mal, mi estimada Susana.
Y no, no es ninguna indirecta. Es un alegato.

If more that fourteen years ago, when I read absolutely fascinated the first typed version of Más allá de las tres dunas (a precious and enthralling hefty volume at least four times bigger than the final book), someone had told me that I will end up illustrating a sequel of the novel, I'm not very sure about how I would have felt. Incredulous, possibly. Amused by the idea.

And here we are. But here and now I must state that I am still waiting for the publication of La Ciudad de los Hombres-Ciudad, a poetic and melancholic work that in those days left a perfume of grey gentle rain over my heart. It hurt sweetly. I do believe that keeping it all for yourself is a very, very wicked thing to do, my dear Susana. 
And no, it is not a hint. It is a statement.
