Oh. My. Goddess.

Me. Muero.
Y me envió algunas fotos. Y, obviamente, morí.

Me encanta.

I'm. Dying.
Today a wonderful creature called Linda Abby Blad (professionally Mermaid Abigail) contacted me to tell me that she had designed a costume inspired by my illustration Brothers (I add it below this text) and that she had worn it during the Elf Fantasy Fair (also known as Elfia) in the Netherlands. And she sent me some photos. And, obviously, I died.

I love it. She is GORGEOUS. The costume and characterization are absolutely stunning. I feel insanely honoured and I don’t know how to explain how much this means to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Linda.

The photographers are Koning Sebastiaan and Henk van Rijssen. Excited thanks to them too. Goddess, I’m elated.

Major Arcana

Podéis elegir no creerme, perfectamente. No asumáis nada. Acudid a diferentes fuentes. Buscad, leed, ved, contrastad. Cuestionad. Reflexionad.

Linaje

Lo, there do I see my Father.

Illustration inspired by the hybrid Asanjo which Alberto Morán Roa had the merciless and sweet idea of entrusting me for his second novel El Rey Trasgo, Títeres de Sangre. Somewhere, a viking drakkar has arrived at ivory shores trimmed with refractory golden forests eternally in flames because of what he has done to me.

But that's how the blood is.

Long-awaited, sheltered births
that the Night anoints with nectar and thorns.

(I was there. The same as You).

Todas hacemos cosas, visibles o no, confesables o no. Muchas. Solas.

Hi hi, little monster

... And we all shared shelter
danger and wine too
to join in this bloodless birth of hope
for we find neither dignity
nor comfort in rest like you.

(Rome. The Death of Longing)

O a mayo. (O a la Reina. Y mayo.)

I know that today I should not be doing this. You can blame the wind, for example.
Or May. (Or the Queen. And May.)

The fact is that, definitely, I'm not in the best mood to weave illustrations for children (which is exactly the thing that I should be doing). I stir, laugh, fall silent, scratch, snort, sigh, bite, dance in the inside.

It might be that deep down we are only beautiful animals.
So you better forget us.

Or you can stay, too.

Stay.
Stay.

Because, of course, deep down you know I know you.
(It's the kind of bloody thing that those bloody animals tend to do.)

Dreamland

(Jamás conocí
más Luna que ésta.)

Y si he de morir
pienso morir
ardiendo
pienso morir

(I never knew
any other Moon but this one.)

And if I must die
I intent to die
burning
I intend to die
biting hard
roaring with an impious chant the brightness of the sublime
the pure things carved like a tumult among my bloods
leaving my nails wrecked to the bone against the rocks while I fall
beautiful and gleaming like a Beast
howling like if I were monstrously happy.

And we shall remain invisible...

and we shall remain invisible, for we travel light
for we do not rush toward the light
for we dance if we can
with our eyes closed
all along the borders, all along the road

And would you wear berries in your hair
for this battalion of lovers...?

and we shall make our movements lighter…

(Rome. The Accidents of Gesture)

(…)

Al volver a casa
(tanteando el camino, deglutiendo los ecos)
tropecé con algo suave y pequeño.

No necesité el espejo, hermana:
sus ojos no brillaban.

Proseguí en silencio.

I saw the gleam
of the vixen's amber-colored eyes,
I saw her hiding behind all that is sweet,
slipping away through the warm tides of the nocturnal milk.

I hung the rings on my naked hips
and I carved red words into my arms
to make the Moon listen to me.
I glowed like the vixen's eyes,
sister,
vulnerable and slightly virgin,
standing there among all that is black.
When She looked at me,
I held out my hand with the mirror
and sang my appeal
(I knew that She knew,
She knew what I didn't know I knew).

(…)

Returning home
(feeling the way, swallowing the echoes)
I tripped over something tiny and soft.

I didn't need the mirror, sister:
her eyes did not glow.

Silently, I walked on.

Vermillion

Amada bestia mitológica
Detestada criatura inexistente.

–¿Quién eres tú? –susurró–. ¿Eres Rukh?
−Soy Lír −respondió él, súbitamente asustado−. ¿No me conocéis?

Beloved mythological beast
Loathed non-existent creature.

"Who are you?" she whispered. "Are you Rukh?
"I'm Lír," he answered, suddenly frightened. "Don't you know me?" But she backed away, and it seemed to the prince that her steps were as flowing as an animal's, and that she even lowered her head in the way of a goat or a deer(…).Thereupon she halted, looking at him with her head a little turned, still with the air of some slim, furred creature peering out of a thicket. But her eyes held a human look of loss, as though she had missed something she needed, or suddenly realized that she had never had it.

(Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn)

Under this piercing radiant moon we will be waiting all awake
returning home, returning home

before you know.

Feliz blancura y feliz invierno, bellas criaturas.

Christmas card for that marvelous digital literary magazine called El Mar de Tinta.

I wish you were aware of the delicious and immense pleasure that doing this assignment has meant for me. Almudena Avilés practically let me run and dance free like a madwoman. And that is exactly what I have done.

Or nearly nearly. There is a slightly different, slightly darker version of this illustration, which has been temporary hidden in the half-light. But soon enough she will slip here barefoot crossing the threshold behind which she awaits, and she will whisper beautiful things to you as she did with me (but it's just that everything is part of the same thing, isn't it…?).

Happy whiteness and happy winter, gorgeous creatures.

No quiero saber
Junco y agua y bruma y voz
Pies más blancos que la ira
más punzantes que el dolor

Recuerdo los pasos
Recuerdo
los
pasos

(This storm is mine,
inside her I can scream if I want to and nobody will know, I swear
And believe me, I scream a lot
a lot)

I remember.
I remember and I die softly
I don't want to know
I do want to know.
I feel you there, I feel us
like you feel the breeze that assaults you before the real assault of breath
the wind that makes you close your eyes and mounts unavoidably the smile on your mouth and drags you along
like you feel the first note of that dance
Reed and water and mist and voice
Feet whiter than rage
bitter than pain

I remember the steps
I remember
the
steps

The craving is so huge and it is so huge the beauty

More hunger
each time more hunger

As she laughs
the delirium lands on her shoulder blades and seeds stars on her brow
it pours out from her on green streams when she discovers the wheat ears gleaming like gods

This world which leans out
(which scratches)
from behind her skin

And it is true, each time
she is worse at hiding
(when she thinks that nobody is looking at her, she stays still looking into the distance with her eyes wide open)
Deep down –she pretends to say to herself–
I should stop breathing so strongly
dreaming so strongly

She looks into the horizon that awaits her and she shivers.

The Orchid Queen

Oí el coro de sus voces bellas,
inhumanas,

−¡Paseando! Arabella, ¿te has vuelto loca?

I heard the choir of their beautiful voices,
inhuman,
calling me.
They called the crimson hope,
the footprints’ paleness,
the night.

They called the power of a sharp brush,
the rough and warm caressing
of the shadows.

I heard the murmur of their green nails,
their heartbeats,
as they grew up.
I heard the deep and exquisite squalor of their canticles,
the purple and vibrant moaning
of their throats,
when the sun was wearing out
there,
in the horizon.

"Where in the world have you been?" demanded Strange.
"Walking," she said. Her voice was just as it has always been.
"Walking! Arabella, are you quite mad? In three feet of snow? Where?"
"In the dark woods", she said, "among my soft-sleeping brothers and sisters. Across the high moors among the sweet-scented ghosts of my brothers and sisters long dead. Under the grey sky through the dreams and murmurs of my brothers and sisters yet to come."

(Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, Susanna Clarke)

The Evil Queen

Recordadme

aquí

por dios

creedme palpitante
aún
creedme inmensa y latente
irrevocable cual tormenta humana
ineludible como ocaso hambriento
inexplicable

sabedme
añoradme
temedme

(Ellos saben de mí
y yo los siento
y lo siento tanto

lo siento tanto)

Y pierdes

Remember me

here

for god's sake

believe me beating
still
believe me immense and latent
irrevocable as a human storm
unavoidable as a starving  twilight
inexplicable

know me
miss me
fear me

(They know about me
and I feel them
and I'm so sorry

I 'm so sorry)

And you lose
(you get lost)
like the snowflake goes to be forgotten in everything that is cold
and as the last thing you want is
being forgotten
you seek among the wolves that which gave you some sense
which cast a shadow apart from you
which made you a symbol
but you only find the beauty of the others
the beauty of all of them you were, that you are not
Those who munched slowly your entrails
and drank your blood

(They said that I was an absolute delight, can you believe it
So many scars from which the cherries bloom delicately

And then they will ask why I am such a beast.)

II. The Hunter

¿No…?

Oh, no.
Estoy segura de que no.

Because the eternity still comes
at night
to show me its back
to point at the smiling and unchangeable tip of its tongue.

He is the Hunter.
Yes, that simple.

Did I tell you about the twins, too…? No…?

What a disaster.
But at least you haven't met this one yet.

Oh, no.
I am absolutely sure you have not.

I. The Watcher

And I know that there are more stars than these ones:
in my dream I had three keys...
I brush their multicolored corpses with my fingertips
and remove the dust from their ivory lips.

I told you she had brothers.

He is the Guardian.
Or the Watcher (we all know that there are things that don't have only one name).

While he slides, he gives off a subtle scent of bronze and leather, of dust and dried leaves.
You have seen him sometime, you know it.
He, as a Guardian, never forgets; but people often do.

Of course he is not a person.
Why would anyone want to be a person…?

Blooming

arraso a mi paso

Everyone I have loved, everyone I haven't loved yet
(blessed future
blessed beauty that awaits me)

I stretch out my hands and I turn red like the twilight's burning lament
I devastate as I walk
I watch you bleed…

As I told somebody, she is the Daughter of wind and madness.
She scratches quite a lot with her red little fingernails. But, when she smiles (the few times she does), her lips take a beautiful nuance, even sweet.

She has brothers and sisters.
Oh yes.
Brothers and sisters.

This is the second drawing I have colored digitally in Painter. I think I could die of happiness in this threshold that has just opened for me.

And this dumb melody that drags me along…
