Black, Red, White

Got woken in the night
by a mystical golden light,
my head soaked in river water.
(…)
The smell of redwood giant.
A banquet for the shadows.
Horse and I,
we're dancers in the dark.
(…)

And they sang to me, this is yours to wear...
You're the chosen one, there's no turning back.

Now...

(Bat for Lashes, Horse and I)

Ella
era árida
como la sangre y la tormenta.

El blanco al alba.
El rojo al amanecer.

Y el negro…

A veces
(y sólo a veces)

She
was arid
like the blood and the storm.

The white one at dawn.
The red one at daybreak.

And the black one…

Sometimes
(and only sometimes)
she thinks that she can still smell the silvery broom.

I. The Watcher

And I know that there are more stars than these ones:
in my dream I had three keys...
I brush their multicolored corpses with my fingertips
and remove the dust from their ivory lips.

I told you she had brothers.

He is the Guardian.
Or the Watcher (we all know that there are things that don't have only one name).

While he slides, he gives off a subtle scent of bronze and leather, of dust and dried leaves.
You have seen him sometime, you know it.
He, as a Guardian, never forgets; but people often do.

Of course he is not a person.
Why would anyone want to be a person…?

Blooming

arraso a mi paso

Everyone I have loved, everyone I haven't loved yet
(blessed future
blessed beauty that awaits me)

I stretch out my hands and I turn red like the twilight's burning lament
I devastate as I walk
I watch you bleed…

As I told somebody, she is the Daughter of wind and madness.
She scratches quite a lot with her red little fingernails. But, when she smiles (the few times she does), her lips take a beautiful nuance, even sweet.

She has brothers and sisters.
Oh yes.
Brothers and sisters.

This is the second drawing I have colored digitally in Painter. I think I could die of happiness in this threshold that has just opened for me.

And this dumb melody that drags me along…

Three for a girl...

lentas,
silenciosamente.

(Illustration for the children's tale written by Teresa Blanch Fan Tasmina y el castillo de la colina verde, which will be published soon by San Pablo publishing house.)

They came into the frame slowly, their feet invisible,
they made themselves confortable and smiled at me.
Once again, I could do nothing but start to laugh in an ebullient and somehow disturbing way.

And this terrible thirst
of an atrocious paleness, of a desperate crimson hue.

And the orchids blooming for the first time after several years,
gently,
quietly.

He wants to grow to twenty feet tall...

Look at the tiger jumping out of her mouth...

(Illustration for the children's tale written by Teresa Blanch Fan Tasmina y el castillo de la colina verde, which will be published soon by San Pablo publishing house.)

I love drawing this little phantom girl…

These drawings I am uploading are my first experience illustrating children’s books, and this is also the first time I give color digitally. Considering that I have not used a graphic tablet before, I feel quite satisfied with the results…

Nothing is going to stop me now.

Look at the tiger jumping out of her mouth...

Oh my

Yeah, sometimes I have felt exactly like this too.

Little girl, little girl…
Red, white, blue…

Bologna Children's Book Fair

Y provechoso…

Os adjunto unas fotos que se tomaron en el stand de SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators), repleto de gente muy agradable.

In March I went to Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the most important international event of this field. I carried a little portfolio with me along with some promotional items (that I will show you soon), and I also acted as an interpreter for the illustrator Marina Seoane.

Up to some months ago, visiting this fair was something that seemed only a remote possibility without predictable date of fulfillment; and though it has been a bit exhausting, having had the opportunity is simply amazing. And useful…

I attach some photos taken at the SCBWI stand (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators), full of very kind people.

These wonderfully smiling women are the illustrators Marina Seoane and Sally Cutting.

In here, Marina Seoane and me are ready to show her work to publishers and other interested people.

And for those who know well or have met me personally: no, I am not camouflaged. I like brown color.
Really.
It’s been like this for years.
I said yes, dammit.
Besides, I don’t know why I should give any explanations to you, good Goddess.

(… I know at least of one person that will be giving a hint of a sarcastic smile while reading this. Oh well.)

Sisters (I)

And she walks like you
And she smells almost like you
A child of the wild just like you

Yes.

Obra en proceso.

Espejos, espejos, espejos...

Work in progress.

Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors...
Did I mention that I have some kind of fascination with reflections...?
Oh, well, how could you imagine.

They are inspired by Pain of Salvation's song Sisters.
Which is not surprising either.

Recovering old things

(190 x 80 cm, óleo sobre lienzo/oil on canvas)

In some ways they are dreams.
In some ways not.

Some time ago, I said regarding this:
"They". Also it could be called "Theirs". Or "Their Own". Or "Hers(s)".

There have been so many names passing through my head every time I have to give one to this painting. I haven't found the right name yet, whether such a thing exists for anything.

Today, they have no name.

It's been some years now, but I still love them.
My motionless dancing ladies. My quiet twins.

Feliz Yule

Happy Yule, my dears.

I know that, as usual, I am a little late. But it is also true that some people would tell me that I’ve arrived, in fact, at the perfect period; so everything is marvelous.
They have told me too that there are other important festivities at these times, but as all the festivities spring more or less form the same thing after all, I hope all of you feel congratulated whoever you are, whatever you believe in, and wherever you come from.

In short, I wish you the most mercilessly happiness, as I always say.

I dedicate to you this beautiful horned lady, partially inspired by a fragment belonging to a larger project about oniric creatures.

I’m sorry, but I’m afraid that she is not wearing a Santa’s cap or anything like that.
She was quite specific about that.

«There is no male counterpart known of the horned woman. And, no matter how much shepherds and travelers regret it, she doesn’t seem to have any interest in human males. If, by chance, one of them comes across her while she stands naked and beautiful and frost-covered in the middle of a snowed landscape; she will merely cast a glance at him with certain absentminded indifference, like if she had in front of her a curious specimen without great scientific interest. This will make human males become exasperated, and they will possibly make the mistake of approaching her to attract her attention.
When she smiles, the thin lips of the horned woman take a faint shade of dark cherry.

She feeds on milk, holly tree’s berries, raw meat and ginger roots. »

Aunque yo encantada).
Y sí: he disfrutado terriblemente diseñando vestimentas y personajes. No sabéis cuánto...

Espero que vosotros lo disfrutéis igualmente.

I make a little stop here to leave you three illustrations of "El Club de las Palabras Prohibidas", written by Felisa Moreno Ortega and published by Edimáter, soon at your disposal.

Yes: She is another woman with  auburn curly hair (this is the writers' doing, I swear it. My pleasure, though).
And yes: I have
terribly enjoyed designing the clothing and the characters. You don't know how much...

I hope you enjoy it too.

Red Sonya: some sketches

Sketch for a cover featuring Robert E. Howard's character Red Sonya (most commonly known as Red Sonja).
This story is the birth of the character, and the plot is set in the first half of the 16th century, during a harsh winter in Vienna. So we can forget the famous chain mail bikini: very pretty, boys, but no very useful if you are a mercenary and a murderer.

Below, one of the costume studies.
(Don’t be very strict with the chronology: I usually lose control when I see beautiful ornaments, even if the culture that made them has passed away long ago…)

New Portfolio in carbonmade

My dear creatures:

Now that I have come back from wandering around the LIBER (the International Book Fair that has taken place in Madrid) for three days, I have just created a little portfolio in carbonmade to offer a little (a very little) sample of my work to take a glance at until I am able to arrange my own and beautiful website.
You will find it here: http://mardelvalle.carbonmade.com/

Have a sweet night.

Somehow delirious

Ella me dice

verde y azul y cuerno y sangre
ventisca y amapola
naranja circunferencia
ojo de mirlo herido y de hecatombe)

(...)

Tanto miedo
aún
y tanto

Detrás del amor está la muerte
dice

Detrás del aire

pero tiene las manos más fuertes
que he visto, y se lo digo
pero ella no me escucha
ya

no me escucha de nuevo

She tells me
that I should stop trying for a while
she says I-don’t-know-what about birth and being fed up
with wearing the cheeks always beneath the eyes

(She has
-and you must believe me-
pretty beautiful eyes
green and blue and horn and blood
blizzard and poppy
orange circumference
wounded blackbird and hecatomb eye)

(…)

So much fear
still
and so much

Behind love there is death
she says

Behind the air

but she has the strongest hands
that I have seen, and I tell her
but she is not listening
any more

she is not listening again

There is so much that I could tell you...
My fingers are different colors...

(Pixie-like Sandra, from one of Maite M. Senosian's photographs.
Let's see if makes up her mind to create a blog for herself once and for all, so that all of you could enjoy them too.
... and yes, I still want that hat.

My body is a cage...

y tengo tanta hambre.

Don't ask me to wrap you up in my arms:
Loneliness hurts,
and I am so hungry.

(My body is a cage
that keeps me from dancing
with the one I love

But my mind holds the key...)

Madame La Rouge

... ¿Verdad?

Madame La Rouge, Queen of  Flowers.
She also has something special with horses. And with dance.

You know, sometimes they tell me strange things about her.
But one doesn't have to believe everything people tell you, isn't it?

Sometimes, I believe she knows strange things about me too.
But one doesn't have to pay attention to everything one believes...

... Isn't it?
